Algebra, geometry, number theory and probably are among the secondary school math topics covered by the AIME exam, which is one of a “series of exams used to challenge bright students on the path toward choosing the team that represents the United Sates at the International Mathematics Olympiad,” according the organization’s website.

Problems usually require either very creative use of secondary school curriculum, or an understanding as to how different areas of math can be used together to investigate and solve a problem.” It’s a free response type of exam with a three-hour time limit and a total of 15 questions that increase in difficulty as the exam progresses. Calculators are not permitted.

The March 26 in-person exam was cancelled, and eventually became a June 6 online exam. Along with Eddie, four additional students took the June 6 exam: Aarav Chandra ’22, Emma Hong ’22, Evan Ren ’21 and Daniel Xu ’23. Math teacher David Maycock notes, “The USAJMO is a two-day online contest taking a total of nine hours.”

Congratulations to these five students for applying their problem-solving skills!
